Basic properties of arenga wood

The basic properties of the stem of Arenga or Arenga pinnata from twodistricts of West Java were examined. The anatomical treatment involved the general structure of the stem and the anatomical composition. Physical and mechanical properties included the moisture content, shrinkage, fibre saturation point, density and strength. From the proximate chemical composition, arenga wood was not found to be suitable for pulping. Although arenga wood has generally a low natural durability, it was found to be very durable against dry wood termite. Treating arenga wood with 3% CCA by the vacuum pressure method showed a significant difference in penetration in the three different portions of the stem. Cold soaking using BFCA and CCB showed a significant effect of soaking period on penetration and retention. Air drying the sample from one district took 13 weeks and from the other 8 weeks. This difference was attributed to the different specific gravities an d climatic conditions. Kiln drying was difficult with a medium drying rate. The wood was proned to surface checking. Using four sawing methods, sawing recovery ranged from 10.8-14.7% and productivity from 0.094-0.419% m³/hour. The power consumption using full and alternate stellite tips was 67.7 watt sec/cm² and 55.0 watt sec/cm², respectively. From the machining properties examined with respect to planing, shaping, boring and sanding, arenga wood could be rated as good to very good.
