The distribution of three most important rattan species in Peninsular Malaysia viz. Calamus manan, C. caesius, and C. ornatus is described. The distribution seems to be influenced by certain environmental factors such as well-drained soil, topographic positions and rainfall. The concentration of species is located in the north-wester states of Peninsular Malaysia. The industrial status based on current survey conducted by the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) and problems encountered concerning the development of the rattan industry are also highlighted and discussed.
