Sulphate-anthraquinone (AQ) pulping of fibrous strands from oil palm trunk accorded higher pulp yield and lower Kappa number over the sulphate pulping without AQ, especially at 11% and 13% active alkali with the addition of 0.1% AQ. In particular, the 13% active alkali cook with AQ indicated an increase in screened pulp yield from 50 to 55% and a large drop in Kappa number from 39 to 28. In addition, the AQ cooks yielded pulps with a reduction of shives by about 6% for the 11% cook. However, the handsheet strength properties did not show any marked increase in strength properties over the cooks without AQ. Nevertheless, the folding endurance showed large increase with increase in beating time.
