State of Exploitation and Development Strategies for the Fishery Resources in Suriname (Fin-Fish).
1988
Charlier Pierre
A review of the fisheries in Suriname is presented (shrimps trawl fishery is not included). The present landings of the various fishing methods are estimated. Their main biological, economic, socioeconomic characteristics are examined. The fishery resources are grouped into fishing stocks, and the significance of each of them, as well as their state of exploitation, are discussed. Several stocks being underexploited, different development strategies (for the demersal resources) are compared, according to a number of criteria: impact on stock, foreseen profitability, management issues (number of boats to be allowed, and other regulations) are also discussed.
