Grain yield panicle length, leaf disease and threshing percentage of S2- lines were not significantly different from F5- lines. S2- lines showed higher 1,000- seed weight, plant height and lodging percentage than F5- lines. But F5-lines showed greater number of days to flower, seeds per panicle and panicle weight than S2- lines. Both S2- lines and F5- lines gave higher grain yield, number of days to flower, panicle length, head exertion, seeds per panicle, 1,000-seed weight and panicle weight than their parents. New improved population showed greater grain yield, plant height, panicle length and panicle width than the original KU. population 1, KU. population 5 and their parents. Average panicle length, seeds per panicle, 1,000- seed weight of new improved population were higher than their parents but not significantly different from the original population. Maturity of new improved population was earlier with a better yield and better head exertion than S2- lines. The new improved population and S2- lines gave somewhat the same performance for the following characteristics : plant height, panicle length, weeds per panicle, 1,000- seed weight, leaf diseases, lodging percentage and threshing percentage.
