Diallel cross and combining ability in burley tobacco.

The magnitude of heterosis and combining ability was determined using five cultivars of burley tobacco and 10 F1 hybrids among them. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Heterosis was observed only in leaf yield and leaf width. The hybrids averaged 28.9% more yield than the parent cultivars (1.97 t/ha vs 1.53 t/ha) and their leaves were broader by 11.8%. Negligible heterosis was observed for all other parameters studied. Estimate of general combining ability was significant for plant height, number of leaves, and leaf length. Specific combining ability effects were observed in all characters investigated. This indicates the predominance of non-additive genetic components in the material, especially for yield and leaf width wherein the specific combining ability mean squares were more than twice the general combining ability mean squares. The superior mean performance of the F1 hybrids suggests the possibility of producing them in a commercial scale. However, additional evaluation is needed in different environments before they are recommended for commercial production.
