Establecimiento y productividad de Lotus uliginosus en sistemas silvopastorales del sur de Chile.

A trial was carried out to study the factors affecting the establishment and productivity of Lotus uliginosus under agroforestry management on a red clay soil in the Coastal hills of the Province of Valdivia. Two levels (0 and 200 trees/ha) of tree cover, two utilization heights (8 and 12 cm) and two fertilization rates (i.e. high, 30 N, 240 P2O5, 112 K2O, 100 CaO and 53 S kg/ha; and low, 30 N, 60 P2O5, 28 K2O, 25 CaO and 6 S kg/ha), were used; this implied 8 treatments with 4 replications in a stand of 13 yrs old Pinus radiata. A complete randomized block design was used in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Lotus was hand oversown together with Festuca arundinacea var. K-31, seed rates of 10 and 10 kg/ha, respectively. All the experimental area was grazed by sheep during this period. Lotus showed an adequate percentage of establishment and number of plants per square meter under the agroforestry management, being superior to that obtained in the open grassland. Lotus plants under the silvopastoral system did not present a lower development when compared to Lotus plants in the open grassland, which shows a good adaptation to shading. Tree cover and utilization height had a significant effect on the percentage of Lotus covering. The fertilization rate also had a significant effect, where a greater percentage of covering was obtained with the high level. The open grassland exhibited a greater annual forage production (2810 kg TDM/ha with respect to the grassland in the silvopastoral system (1974 kg TDM/ha). With 8 cm utilization height a higher production of TDM and GMS was obtained, this did not happen for lotus DM which presented a better response with the utilization of 12 cm height.
