Water quality and solute load of the river Ofin [Ghana] and some of its tributaries.
1987
Amuzu A.T.
The water quality of the River Ofin and some of its tributaries was monitored from August 1976 to July 1977 to collect physico-chemical data and estimate the solute load. An increase in the concentration of the chemical constituents and total ionic content, caused by leaching of soil particles of the river water from Ofinso near the headwaters to Dunkwa further downstream, was observed. The water quality of the main stretch of the river is good for multipurpose use with pockets of pollution at Obuasi (cyanide pollution caused by effluents from gold mines) and at Dunkwa (caused by dredging of the bottom sediment and discharge of untreated rubber wastes). The annual solute load of 99,493 metric tons is carried by the river, with the tributory river Kwabrafo contributing about one-third of the load.
