Pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of N, P and K applications on protein production and protein quality of soybean seed. N application of 1 g/pot increased seed yield and seed protein (%N x 6.25) whereas higher N rates have no affect on either yield or protein content. N concentration was considerably reduced by P but not K deficiency, in spite of yield reduction in both cases. Increasing N concentration were associated with a slight decline in the concentration (g amino acid/ 16 gN) of lysine, cystine, methionine and threonine. When expressed as mg amino acid per 100 g dry matter. the concentration of all amino acids except those of cystine and methionine increased with increasing N content. A comparison of the amino acid pattern of soybean protein with the standard FAO/WHO amino acid pattern indicates close agreement except the two S-containing amino acids, cystine and methionine, which became limiting at the N content higher than 8.1 %.
