Study on the effect of planting density on growth and yield of four soybean varieties, since it could be arranged in continuously increasing spacings, by Fan designed plot. As planting density increased, plant height, stem length and internode length increased, but number of branches and stem diameter decreased. Furthermore, with the planting density, top dry matter per m** (2), number of pods per m** (2) and L.A.I. increased, while topdry matter per plant, number of pods per plant and light transmittance decreased. The optimum L.A.I. was 4.1 for Nanbushirome and 6.4-7.0 for the other varieties. The optimum planting density for yield was 34 for Nanbushirome, 35 for Suzukari and 45 plants/m** (2) for Jangyop, respectively. In contrast, the yield of paldal increased with increasing planting density. We conclude that fan-designed plot is efficient method, because it requires small area for determining optimum density or for studying plant response to spacing changes.
