Total of 1,811 specimens of tamarind had been collected and investigated for clonal selection of elite clones. Of these 55 accessions of sour tamarind and 25 accessions of sweet tamarind were selected for preliminary experiment in the field plots. The desirable clones were expressed in term of real value of pulp (RV) which corresponds with the amount of pulp in the whole pod. The good clones selected have the RV value greater than 10. Other characteristics used for screening purpose are tartaric acid and sugar contents, size and shape of pods, color, taste and palatability of pulp. The ratio of tartaric acid to sugar for selected sweet tamarind accessions were between 1:13 to 1:23 whereas those of sour tamarind clones were between 1:2 to 1:11 respectively. Maximum sugar content of 2 sweet tamarind accessions were 47 % and maximum tartaric content of a sour tamarind accession was 11 %. Variability of heredity was observed in both sour and sweet tamarind types despite that this genus contain only one species which also reflect to its narrow genetical base.
