The silage production of a mixed sward was studied for 3 years with 3 N rates: 0,90 and 180 Kg./Ha. Clover content and N fixation, by acetylene-ethylene reduction, is determined. The response to N application was greater in the first than in the second cut for silage, and very low in autumn. The crude protein level of the silage cuts was scarcely influenced by the N rate. Nitrogen fertilizer affected greatly biological N fixation. The efficiency of N fixation per unit of clover is not directly related to the amount of clover in the sward, depending also on the time of the year and the level of N application.
