Cultivo del almendro en zonas semiaridas del sureste espanol.

The factors that influence almond production, Prunus amygdalus Batsch, are analysed in the five homoclimatic zones of the region of Murcia (semiarid climate), both in dry areas (57.000 ha) and irrigated areas (10.500 ha). Among the numerous autochthonous cultivars, no late flowering appears so that the frosts provoke important crop losses, especially in the coldest inland zones. On the other hand, in the coastal areas, practically without frost, the lack of rain is the limiting factor. Nevertheless in the irrigated plantations the autochthonous selected varieties (Garrigues, Ramillete, Atocha, Peraleja y Colorada) show excellent productive behaviour, especially when drip irrigated, and reach approximate yields of 1000 kg/ha of almond nuts in young plantations. Among the conclusions we would like to point out the excessive number of varieties being cultivated, the need to obtain late flowering varieties (adapted to this areas) through breeding programs with foreign genitors, the limitation of cultivation only to adequate zones, the introduction of proper pollenizers and the putting in place of beehives to assure the transport of the pollen.
