The second Workshop on rural mechanisation dealt with changes in the perceptions of rural mechanisation which impinge on social, economic and environmental issues in policy development, research and planning procedures. The Workshop aimed to build upon the first Workshop. First day topics included an overview of priority areas for development and the potential role of rural mechanisation; agricultural mechanisation strategies; participatory methods to increase the technical capacity and technological choice of rural communities; participatory technology development in Kenya: the (DAREP) Tools and Tillage Research project; animal traction in South Africa; draft animal research to provide for sustainable development; increasing productivity on hillside farms; empowering resource poor stakeholders in rural mechanisation research and development processes and small scale coconut processing in Tanzania. On the second day, participants were divided into four groups discussing a number of topics including identification of demand for research; research activities and methods; dissemination of results and farmer uptake and the role of UK institutions.
