Achievements and goals in quality improvement of the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.).
1988
Swiezynski K.M.
The progress in two aspects: tuber appearance and starch content has been analysed in Federal Republic of Germany, in Netherlands and in Poland. In both aspects in all the 3 countries the mean level of cultivars has been improved in the last 25 years, but top achievements of the old cultivars have not been surpassed. High genetic variation in various aspects of quality is available to breeders but there are difficulties to utilise it efficiently. These are caused mainly by the genetic constitution of the potato plant and by the limited efficiency of the generally applied breeding methods. There is a chance that utilization of diploids will improve substantially the breeding efficiency, however it is a long term approach which has only been started recently.
