Wide hybridization for sweet potato improvement at ViSCA, Philippines.

A crossability test among eight Ipomoea relatives and six sweetpotato varieties and breeding lines showed that a series of diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid wild Ipomoea accessions are cross-compatible with sweetpotato. This result has allowed wide hybridization as a method to improve the sweetpotato germplasm for breeding work. Reciprocal crosses involving 16 sweetpotato varieties and breeding lines versus the hexaploid wild relative produced varying numbers of seeds, but higher success in seed germination was obtained when sweetpotato is the seedparent. In sweetpotato (6x) by 6x wild relative controlled crosses using 23 sweetpotato genotypes as female parents, 404 F1 seeds were generated. Percent germination of seeds by family ranged from zero to 100 percent. Of the 23 cross-combinations, eleven families reached field evaluation. Only two families produced tubers but ten families had high dry matter content.
