Effect of P [Phosphorus] B [Boron] and Zn [Zinc] fertilization on sugar beet grown on calcareous soils [Egypt].

Pot and field experiments were conducted to study the effect of soil phosphorus application and foliar application of zinc and boron on sugar beet plants grown in calcareous soil (CaCO3, 32 %), deficient in phosphorus (5.4 ppm), moderate in zinc (0.86 ppm) and adequate in B (0.7 ppm) supply. Significant increase of dry weight as well as T.S.S. content of sugar beet roots were obtained as the addition of phosphate amounted to 45 and 60 kgs P2O5/feddan in field and pot experiments respectively. Further addition of phosphate did not show an economic profit. Foliar application of zinc under different rates of phosphate addition showed a slight effect on the dry weight and T.S.S. content of sugar beet roots.
