The carotenoid pattern of rust spores (148 samples of 72 taxa, 15 genera, 7 families) have been investigated by high-performance liquid-chromatography. All except 23 samples contain beta- and gamma-carotene, the total amount of carotene content and the ratio between beta- and gamma-carotene content may vary considerably. Spores with strongly pigmented walls contain little carotene in the cytoplasma. On the contrary, spores with colourless or weak pigmented walls contain either a high or a low amount of carotene. The latter case can be interpreted as an adaption to dispersal at low light intensities and high humidity. It's likely, that carotenes in rust spores provide protection against light of high intensities. As no carotenoids except beta- and gamma-carotene have been found, the chemotaxonomic value of this study is limited. But the lack of carotenes in certain groups has proved to be a good taxonomic criteria.
