The present paper deals with the first investigation results of commercial clonal apple rootstocks suitability to high density orchards. In the spring of 1995 a trial was started at Dobele HPBES. As the experimental material 16 clonal apple rootstocks of north-American, West-European and East-European origin were chosen. The methods of the trial are described. The measurements and evaluations (of bud-break, shoot diameters, number of leafstocks, etc.) made in 1996 are explained. The trial results have been analysed and are discussed.
