Effects of chemical pretreatments and use of floral preservative on subsequent quality and longevity of cut gladiolus after dry shipment.

The treatment of "Dukat", "Lavenesque", and "Lustige Witwe" cut gladiolus spikes with a preservative solution consisting of 8HQC + GA + S after simulated shipment for 24 h at 20 degrees C markedly improved bud opening, increased spike lenght, floret diameter, and the longevity of whole inflorescences. Pulsing of cut gladiolus spikes in STS + S or in STS + S + GA + BA had only negligible effect on spike quality and longevity after 24 h shipment at 20 degrees C. Pulsing before shipment and treatment with the preservative solution after shipment and treatment with the preservative solution after shipment greatly improved the quality of all tested cultivars and slightly increased their longevity after 48 h of dry transport at 4 degrees C and at 20 degrees C.
