Comparative cytogenetic studies on the Japanese native horses.

Mitotic metaphases in seven breeds of the Japanese native horses, namely the Hokkaido horses, Kiso horses, Tsushima horses, Misaki horses, Tokara horses, Noma horses, and Yonaguni horses, were comparatively studied using G-, C-and sliver-stains (NORs) method. The diploid number of chromosomes was found to be 64 in all the Japanese native breeds examined. Similar patterns were observed on the G-banded karyotypes and the morphological features of C-banded and silver-stained (NORs) metaphases between seven Japanese native breeds and the domestic horses. These results suggest that there are no difference in the karyotypes between the Japanese native horses examined and the domestic horses such as the Thoroughbred.
