The chopped rice straws of 2-4 cm in length were used as a sole source of carbon for investigations of cellulase formation by isolated FKN 125 in solid culture condition. The fungus showed the highest production of cellulase within 8 days of incubation at 40 degree celsius when 7.5 and 5.0 % (NH4)2SO4 (w/w), 1.0 % KH2PO4 (w/w), 70 % initial moisture content, and inoculum size od 107 spores per 10 gram of substrate was added. The initial pH was adjusted to 5.0-5.5. The highest enzyme production was interpreted in terms of filter paper and carboxymethyl cellulose degrading activities as 16.353 and 48.71 units per gram of substrate. The B-glucosidase and xylanase were also produced this fungal strain. The lysed rice straw was examined under the scanning electron microscopy. The surface structure of rice straws were hydrolysed. The optimum temperature for filter paper and carboxymethyl cellulose enzyme reaction was 65 degree celsius and the optimum pH were 4.6 and 3.6 respectively. Both enzymes could show the highest temperature stability of degrading activity at 50 degree celsius for 60 minutes incubation, and were inactivated completely when the temperature was 100 degree celsius. These two enzymes were also stable in reaction at pH 3.0 to 7.0. The fungal strain FKN 125 was studied on cultural and morphological characteristics and was identified as Aspergillus fumigatus (Fresenius) strain FKN 125.
