Fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from factorial fertiliser trials in different locations in Nigeria were analysed to determine the relationship between the components of FFB and bunch weight. There were highly significant correlations between individual FFB weight and spikelet number per bunch, number of fruits per spikelet, number and weight of fruits per bunch and weight of individual bunch waste. The correlation coefficient (r) in these cases ranged from 0.52 to 0.97. Similar mesocarp thickness correlated positively but slightly with ripe fruit weight (r = 0.25*, 62df). In one of the locations where palms were two years older, ripe fruits correlated significantly with under-develop fruits (r = 0.38**,62df). There were no significant correlations between FFB weight and mesocarp thickness, shell thickness and kernel diameter. Also, there were no significant correlations between ripe fruit weight, and shell and kernel thickness. In these cases (r) ranged between 0.02 and 0.24. The results implied that the components of FFB have varying degree of influence on FFB weight. The coefficient of determination (r2) ranged from 27% - 94% of the variability in FFB weight was due to fruit weight. Average bunch weight can be predicted using the number of spikelets per bunch.
