Provenance trials of Acacia mangium willd. at Lad Krating plantation, Chachoengsao [Thailand].

This study on the provenance variation on vegetative and reproductive growth of brown salwood (Acacia mangium), at the age of 4 and 7 years old from 16 provenances was aimed at evaluating the growth; height, diameter and crown diameter, for further selection of promising provenances growing well at Lad Krating Plantation and around this area. There was found low damage by insects and disease on branches, stem and leaves. The stem form of most provenances was moderately, straight with slight bend which showed medium quality one. Flowering development and dispersion, including some physical characteristics, size and weight, of brown salwood seeds were also studied to select the best provenance from suitable seed sources for plantations or seed orchards. The relationship between seed weight of 53 plus trees at the age of 4 and 7 years old brown salwood was also observed. The present study determined the five best provenances of 4 and 7-year-old brown salwood, evaluated from the best growth and good quality were West of Morehead, Papua New Guinea (13459); Oriomo River, Papua New Guinea (13460); Claudie River, Queensland (13229); Tully Mission Beach Rd., Queensland (13460); Claudie River, Queensland (13229); Queensland (13238) and Abergowrie Sf., Queensland (13242) respectively. Trials of seed production study showed there were four superior provenances of plus trees of 4 and 7 years old brown salwood which increased seed production. They were from Oriomo River, Papua New Guinea (13460); West of Morehead, Papua New Guinea (13459); Abergowrie Sf. Queensland (13242); and Syndicate Rd. Tully, Queensland (13239) respectively.
