According to recent reports some open problems in the field of automatic milking have been put on the list of topics for research. Although results are not yet definitive, it may be stated that acceptable proposals to answer important questions like udder/teat cleaning and control of access to the milking place will soon be available. Scientific work will be completed by growing experience based on practical application of milking robots. Although the economic value of automatic milking systems for European family farms is generally accepted, the introduction in areas with different organization of dairy farms (low labour costs) is not obvious at present.
