In order to present a general overview of African ichthyology, the fish is successively considered as a study object, an exploited natural resource and an indispensable part of human heritage. These three viewpoints correspond to three developmental phases. The first dates from the remotest ages, the second from the XXth century, while the last mainly concerns the future.
