Varietal difference in growth and grain yield of broadcast-seeded short duration rice plants with special reference to seed vigor.

Unstable crop establishment is one of the major constraints of direct seeded rice. Besides, short duration varieties are becoming popular. This study was conducted to determine if varietal difference in seed vigor affects crop establishment and to identify the yield determining processes of broadcast-seeded short duration plants. Seeds of 15 varieties, whose vigor was determined by rate of germination (RG), cold germination test, accelerated aging test, and shoot-root length ration (S/R), were seeded by broadcasting in 1991 dry season. Crop establishment, growth parameters during vegetative and ripening stages, and grain yield were analyzed. Varieties with high vigor had better establishment, vegetative growth, and grain yield than those with low vigor. Percentage establishment was closely associated with RG, cold germination and S/R. Grain yield significantly correlated with harvest index, and with total dry matter, crop growth rate, leaf area index and leaf area ratio during the vegetative stage but not with those during the ripening stage. Grain yield of short duration varieties could be increased by selecting high seed vigor varieties.
