Arginine and tryptophan retention and weight gains in broilers on maize or sorghum diets at various levels of energy and protein.

An experiment was designed in 4 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement to test four dietary protein levels (17%-20% P1; 19%-22% P2; 21%-24% P3 and 23%-26% P4) and two ME/P ratios (130:1-155:1, E1; 145:1-170:1, E2) from starting to finishing growth period with two grains (maize and sorghum). Day-old commercial broilers (1020) were included and the feeding trials continued for 10 weeks in summer months. Balance trials for arginine and tryptophan at 5th and 9th week of growth for the starting and finishing period were conducted. Maize based diets were found to be inferior compared to sorghum mashes within the first 6 weeks (starting period) of broiler growth in terms of arginine and tryptophan retentions and live weight gains. Within the sorghum diets, the P1 E2 or P3 E1 diet ranked better than others. As regards the finishing period (6 to 10 weeks age), better retentions were evidenced on P3 E1 amongst the maize diets.
