The suitability of various augers (8, 4 and 2 cm diameter) for the determination of the weed seed content was examined in a field with different seed levels. The measured weed seed content and the precision of the results were affected by the auger diameter: at high seed levels, the 8-cm auger resulted in an overestimation compared with the values determined by the smaller augers. At lower levels, the 4-and 2-cm-augers yielded higher values than the 8-cm-auger. The smaller augers had a higher precision than the 8-cm-auger. Considering the precision and the time nessary for taking the soil samples, the use of the 4-cm-auger is a good compromise for the estimation of the soil seed bank.
