Corn weevil, Sithophilis zeamais Motsch (Coleoptera: curculionidae)- a population model.
1990
Caliboso C.M.
A model based on the Leslie matrix was developed to simulate the population dynamics of the corn weevil, Sithophilus zeamais Motsch. in bagged stack of the stored corn. Validation of the model showed a closely simulated corn weevil population at the sides and bottom core of the stack. Percent weight loss was better simulated at the bottom core. However, the model failed to simulate weevil density at the middle core. Control action should be initiated within 28 to 41 days of storage or when three to four insects per two kg of corn or 3.5 to 5.3% damaged kernels are encountered. The highest benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 2.23 was estimated from the damaged grain-based economic threshold level (ETL). The time- and insect density-based ETL's resulted in 2.16 and 1.65 BCR's respectively. Recommendations are outlined for further development of the model.
