For the past two decades, the Third World countries invested a great deal in equipment in different areas: agriculture, industry, agroindustry, mining exploitation, energy, telecommunications, transport, hospitals, schools and technical schools, civil engineering, etc. The inadequate maintenance of this equipment is notably responsible for substantial money losses. In the macro-economical field, these losses are estimated yearly at 1 to 3 percent of the BNP of the Third World countries. This is due to an excessive need of spare parts, an early replacement of the equipment because of faults, and above all an increased import of goods because of a drop in income owing to an abnormal unavailability. As far as equipment maintenance is concerned, the transfer of technology to the Third World countries contributes not only to a better use of technical equipment, but also to the economical and social development. The present paper deals with an experience of more than twenty years in this field in Africa, South-East Asia, Latin America and tackles the problem from the technical and management point of view.
