Crop-water production functions: economic implications for New Mexico.
Hoyt P.G.
Extract: Crop-water production functions are estimated for alfalfa, corn and cotton grown in New Mexico with two different irrigation efficiency levels. An economic analysis of these production functions provides useful information for farm level irrigation decisions to increase profits and conserve water. The analysis indicates very little change in profit maximizing water quantities applied to the crop in response to changes in crop or water prices, except for corn at extreme price levels and alfalfa. Irrigation water reductions of 20 percent or less have very little effect on short run profits for typical farms and thus could be used to conserve water supplies.
