Removal of moisture from green sapwood of Pinus radiata D. Don and Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell. during confined compression perpendicular to the grain.

Moisture-content and mass reductions and also energy relationships measured during confined platen pressing of sapwood blocks from Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus regnans are presented in the form of regression equations and three-dimensional graphs. The influence of initial degree of saturation and compressive strain is described and compared with data from a similar, earlier experiment in which lateral expansion of the wooden blocks was not restrained. More water could be removed, usually with a slightly higher energy efficiency, in confined compression compared with unconfined compression. The high energy ratios in both confined and unconfined compression indicate the potential value of compression drying for processing green wood during fuelwood production, especially from young small-diameter stems in which sapwood forms a large proportion of the cross-section.
