It was studied the effect of the inclusion of four different levels of tomato pomace (10, 20, 30, 40%) in the diet of early weaned Merino lambs. With that purpose a research was carried out at Rinconada Experimental Station. Forty males and forty females weaned at 17-22 kg liveweight were randomly allotted into four groups and fed with diets which included 10, 20, 30 and 40% of tomato pomace (TP), on a basal diet consisting of alfalfa hay, corn, rapeseed oil meal, fish meal, wheat bran, molasses and minerals. Diets were similar in energy and protein contents. Daily intake and liveweight were measured weekly. Daily gains and feed conversion were calculated too. Total feed intake tended to decrease as the level of TP increased (Y=1.36-0.2X) (Y:intabe X:Pomace). Males grew more than females when the TP was 20% or higher, which reflects a relation between the treatment and the sex. Male lambs fed with T1, T2 and T3 grew faster (YT1=19.14+0.28X; YT2=19.42+0.28X; YT3=19.58+0.27X) and their weight increase was higher (15.2; 15.0 and 14.5) than those fed with T4 (YT4=19.8+0.21X; 12.5 kg). Female behavior was different. Considering the same variables, females fed with T1 treatments obtained better results than those fed with the other 3 treatments (YT1=19.22+0,28X; 15.0 kg versus YT2=19.98+0.19X; YT3=19.29+0.17X; YT4=19.41+0.17X and 10.2; 10.0 and 10.2 kg, respectively). Efficiency of feed conversion improved as TP was increased. It is concluded that is feasible to include TP in the diet of early weaned Merino lambs and when inclusion is up to 30% intake is significantly affected.
