Potential of tubli (Derris sp.) as insecticide.

There is a renewed interest in the use of tubli (Derris sp.) as pesticide due to the problems arising from repeated application of synthetic chemical insecticides. Bioassay results showed the extracts to be effective against diamond back moth, cabbage moth, peach aphid, corn borer, corn seedling maggot, black bean aphid, cotton stainer and dog tick. In the field, the application of derris crude extract and a derris formulation (S49) reduced cornborer larval population, egg mass count and degree of damage. The level of control obtained from derris extract application was comparable with that of carbaryl and carbofuran. The various derris formulations were also evaluated for toxicity to fish and laboratory rats to determine their potential hazards to man and non-target organisms. Of the eleven formulations evaluated, three are highly toxic to fish. Among the various extracts evaluated on laboratory rats, S49 appeared to be the least toxic by the oral route.
