Chemical studies of jute plants at different stages of their growth [in Bangladesh].

In order to assess different components of jute plants at different ages of harvest C. capsularis (CVL-1) was grown with recommended management and harvested after 80, 100, 120 and 140 days of sowing. The highest percentage of bark (45%) was found in plants harvested after 120 days of sowing. The non-cellulosic portion (lignin and hemicellulose) was the least in plants harvested after 80 days. The observation may be communicated to the farmers through extension workers that jute plants (CVL-1) may be harvested between 100 and 120 days for higher yield and better quality fibre in respect of higher cellulose content and lower hemicellulose and lignin content. Such fibres will be useful in non-conventional products, curtains, wall mats etc.
