Since 1991 three farming systems have been compared on all the arable plots of the Burgrain farm. Yields of integrated cereals, potatoes, and corn were on average 11, 6 and 4 % less respectively than in intensive production. During the first four years, however, the meadows showed little difference between the farming systems. Despite partly lower costs in integrated production, its income was SFr. 300.- and SFr. 18.- per hectare and year lower in the first and second crop rotation respectively. In contrast, the low-input system yielded an income that was lower in the first rotation and higher in the second rotation compared to the other farming systems. However, the income losses of the two sustainable farming systems were less than the ecological payments granted by the state. Both the integrated and the low-input systems lead to a reduction in the number of pesticide treatments by 55 and 90 % respectively and a dramatical cut in mineral fertiliser application.
