Evidence for differences between three wheat cultivars in yield response to plant population.

Of 3 cultivars grown at 5 seed levels in 15 experiments in the wheatbelt of WA, Gutha, a new tall variety, required less seed and fewer plants on average to achieve its maximum yield than either Gamenya, an old tall variety, or Aroona, a newer, shorter variety. At sites where Gutha was best adapted its optimum population was about half of that of the other 2 varieties. Gutha produced larger ears, especially at small populations, but did not increase kernel number per unit area as much as Aroona. It is suggested that when a new cultivar is released its optimum plant population for the area in which it is recommended should be assessed.
