Phosphorus is an important major plant nutrient and is required for normal growth of the mulberry plant. Systematic studies on the amounts of phosphorus removal and estimations of requirement of phosphorus for the cultivation of mulberry are needed in view of its economic importance and response of mulberry to phosphorus inputs. A field study was conducted with three varieties under two plant densities. Observations on five harvests of mulberry over one year were recorded along with the pooled data. The leaf and stem phosphorous content varied from 0.31 to 0.35/ and 0.18 to 0.22/ respectively as mean values of five harvests. Total phosphorus removal through mulberry shoot (leaf + stem) ranged from 42.28 to 60.32 kg/ha/yr and through leaf ranged from 30.6 to 43.1 kg/ha/yr. Significant differences in leaf yield, stem yield and phosphorous removal among the varieties and spacings recorded suggest for variety related specification for the application of phosphorous fertilizers for optimizing the yield and quality of mulberry leaf. In the present study removal of soil phosphorous was lesser than the amount of phosphorus supplemented through chemical fertilizer (120 kg/ ha /yr).
