The experiment corresponds to the last year of an experiment planned for three consecutive years. Soil corresponds to a typical Trumao from the Andean piedmont, from the Puerto Octay series. The pasture used presented a low contribution of species of high foraging value. The experimental design consisted of complete randomized blocks with 16 treatments and 3 replicates, using plots of 8 m2. Fertilization used was determined on the base of a soil chemical analysis made at the begining of the experiment, for an expected production of 10,000 kg DM/ha. Nutritional elements considered were NPK primary macronutrients in all of their combinations, also S, Mg, B, Zb, Mo and lime were added. The objectives of the experiment were to determine the forage production response to different fertilization regimes. Also the effect of lime application on forage production and the evolution of chemical characteristics of soil, as well as the effects of fertilization on the pasture botanical composition were studied. The results show a clear response of pasture to the NPK combination. It was not possible to observe the response derived from application of any of the other nutrients studied. From the data gathered during the three years of research, the N-P treatment presented no statistical differences with NPK treatment, which would indicate pottassium as the element less deficitary in this soil. Lime application showed no statistically higher production, but the botanical composition was positively influenced by lime application and showed an improvement in all of the treatments. The economical evaluation, based on marginal costs, K and NPK lime treatments presented the lowest marginal cost. The former by the low cost that the fertilization considered implies, and the second one by the high production levels reached.
