Extract: Corn used for food and industrial purposes now accounts for almost one-third of the corn purchased for domestic use, up from one-fifth in the early seventies. Rapid growth in production of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) accelerated the rate of use late in the decade. In addition, since 1979 gasohol subsidies have encouraged ethanol production by corn processors. Food and industrial use of corn is expected to continue to grow in the early eighties, possibly at a faster rate than in the late seventies. Total food and industrial use of corn will likely reach 1 billion bushels by 1985.
