Organic matter contents in stream water are in the range of 2.13 to 5.19 mg/1 with highest quantities in the fifth class of the watershed. The contents in sediment are 2,200 to 5,460 mg/kg (equivalent to 2.20 to 5.46 %) which are much higher than in water. The sediment in the third class of watershed gave the highest contents. The variations in the quantity of organic matter in stream water showed no definite patterns in regard to the class of watershed and season. The first and the fifth classes possessed highest content of organic matter in winter, the second and the third in summer and the fourth class in rainy season. The quantity of organic matter in sediment showed no variation with season. The major factors which influence the organic matter contents in water are quantity and drainage of water stream as well as land use. The quantity of organic matter in sediment of Maeklong River Basin was comparable to the Upper South, Lower South, Pasak and Chi River Basin while the content in water was lower, Furthermore the quality of the water is still in the range of standard level of fresh water given by FAO. A study of establishing a proper land use measure for this river basin area should be considered.
