Since grazing has always been considered by far the cheapest method of grassland utilization by ruminants, the extension of the grazing season or yearlong grazing has a number of advantages for the farmer; such as the reduction of feeding costs and the amount of winter feed to be prepared and improved carrying capacity during grazing. But in Japan, there are many unsolved problems relating to grazing techniques, because there is almost no tradition of grazing. Therefore, a new grazing system appropriate to Japan must be developed as soon as possible. This study of beef production on pastures established in the underdeveloped regions in the north of the Tohoku area deals with the extension of the grazing season by autumn saved pasture (ASP). The term "ASP" employed in this study means the saving of early autumn growth from hay meadows or pastures for grazing on the ground as it stands during the late autumn to early winter. Going a steep further from the extension of the grazing period using ASP, in the shikoku area, a system of yearlong grazing has been studied, pursuing the possibility of a summer-calving system in a suckler herd under yearlong grazing management, in order to supply cheaper calves for fattening from mountainous regions.
