The present study was undertaken due to the high potential of silvopastoral systems, since soils primarily used in forestry can also be integrated for the production of timber and livestock. Therefore, the effect of pasture improvement (i.e., unfertilized natural pasture, fertilized natural pasture and regenerated pasture) on growth, utilization and quality of the silvopastoral pasture under two radiata pine densities (250 and 500 trees/ha) was evaluated. Trifolium subterraneum, Lolium perenne and Lolium multiflorum were the species used to regenerate pastures, and these treatments were given the same fertilizer rates as the fertilized treatments (60, 92 and 50 kg/ha N, P2O5 and K2O, respectively), unlike the control treatment which was not fertilized. During this work it was observed that dry matter production, percent of utilization and quality of the silvopastoral pasture increased with decreasing tree density. Improvement of pastures increased annual forage production and, on average, 1463, 1889 and 2434 kg DM/ha/year were obtained in the control, fertilized and regenerated treatments respectively, under the two tree densities. In the same order as occurred with the above treatments, pasture showed an increase in protein content and metabolizable energy. Concerning mineral content, phosphorus showed no significant differences between fertilized and regenerated treatments, these being higher than the control. Calcium, was not affected either by pasture improvement or tree density.
