With the objective of improving the conception rate under field conditions thus augmenting smallholder carabao production, two studies were conducted on 439 female carabaos, 267 of which had active ovaries. These animals were given two subcutaneous injections of Synchrocept B (a prostaglandin analogue) 11 days apart followed by AI [artificial insemination] at 72 and 96 hours after the second injection. Twelve days after AI, ovaries were examined to determine whether corpus luteum (CL) was present as a sign of ovulation. The animals' body conditions were also rated using a six-point scale. Considering 145 carabaos 12 days after AI the overall ovulation rate was 73.9%. Ovulation was based on the presence of CL in the ovaries, regardless of its size. Moreover, heat induced inseminated animals with either CLL or CLS in their ovaries 12 days after the last AI were possibly pregnant. Animals whose body conditions were rated good (3) or better got pregnant readily. Moreover, conception rate seldom exceeded 40% in prostaglandin-synchronized female carabaos.
