No Till (NT) is a crop production system which is being accepted by an increasing number of farmers in the area. This system keeps a residue cover on the soil surface, causing changes in nutrient dynamics, organic matter contents and pH, when compared to Conventional Till (CT) systems. The objective of this research was to evaluate the initial effect of NT in some chemical properties of soil in tropical savannas. The experiment was conducted from 1991 to 1993, and the crops grown were sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and soybean (Glycine max). Soil samples were taken at two depths: 0-5 and 5-20 cm, and these were analyzed for pH, organic matter, P, K, Mg, Ca, and micronutrients: Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn. Results indicated that NT soils present nutrient stratification. Nutrient content in NT concentrated at the 0-5 cm depth. Also, there was a slight increase in the organic matter content of soils under NT. Yields were higher in NT than in CT in 1992 and 1993.
