In glasshouse experiments on a range of Australian soils, moist incubation with applied Zn decreased the uptake of Zn by subterranean clover and DTPA-extractable Zn (D-Zn) on all soils relative to freshly applied Zn. The relative effectiveness (RE) of Zn application for subterranean clover growth was measured by dry matter production, uptake of Zn by shoots and D-Zn. All 3 methods gave closely correlated values for RE. The extent of the decline in availability with incubation differed among soils, being greater in alkaline soils, in soils with high clay content, in soils with high levels of organic C, and in soils with free calcium carbonate. A multiple linear regression model was used to explain the relationship between the RE and the soil properties.
