The effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the relationship between yield and quality in wheat and barley.

Quality in wheat and barley is mainly related to grain size and grain nitrogen content. Nitrogen fertilizer can affect yield by changing ear numbers, grains per ear and grain size, and can affect quality by altering grain size, nitrogen content and bake score. If the soil nitrogen status is low, nitrogen fertilizer will increase yield but not necessarily percent grain nitrogen. With higher rates of nitrogen, yields continue to increase, but at a decreasing rate, whereas percent grain nitrogen increases at an increasing rate. At high rates of nitrogen, yields reach a plateau and may start to decline, but percent grain nitrogen continues to increase. The relative effect of nitrogen fertilizer on yield and quality varies according to the rate and timing of the fertilizer application, and is affected by the paddock history, soil moisture status, cultivar, sowing date and level of disease and pest control. This paper summarizes the effect of these factors on yield and quality as observed in trial work in Canterbury. There is no simple relationship between grain yield and quality, but guidelines are being developed to assist farmers to get high yields of high quality grain.
