Forty experimental hybrids and open pollinated varieties were evaluated for yield and agronomic performance in replicated tests across 13 locations nationally during 1986, 1987 and 1988 wet and dry seasons. Four hybrids: SMC 319, 321, 323 and CSX 267 performed exceptionally well against the checks with average yields of 5.73, 6.19, 6.17 and 5.98 t/ha, respectively. When tested for the major corn pest and diseases, the new hybrids were rated tolerant to the Asiatic corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis), stalkrots and leaf blights (Helminthosporium maydis). One open-pollinated variety IES Cn-1 "Isabela Yellow" outyielded the check IPB Var. 1. This new open pollinated variety yields 4.70 t/ha. The new corn varieties are seedboard approved, recommended nationwide and are now commercially available to most corn farmers.
