Response of the rice plant to simulated and actual insect damage.

Simulated damage at different levels and at different crop ages were carried out to determine its effect on yield and to refine action thresholds for defoliating insects and stem borers. For defoliators, damage was mechanically simulated by cutting off leaves to desired level. Rice stem borer damage was simulated by injecting paraquat at the growing point of the plant. Yield was most seriously affected by simulated damage when plants were at panicle initiation stage. Actual damage by rice stem borer was observed at harvest. Percent whitehead, number of borers and grain weight were recorded. Certain degree of damage was not critical to grain yield.
